Once famous for its penguin tours — now a sobering conservation case study. Please don't expect to see penguins here.
The place
Granite Island
Granite Island, linked to Victor Harbor by a causeway and its historic horse-drawn tram, was once home to well over a thousand little penguins and famous guided night tours.
That colony has all but collapsed — from around 1,600 birds two decades ago to only a few dozen adults today, a decline of some 98%. The penguin centre and its tours closed years ago, and researchers now monitor only a tiny remnant.
We include Granite Island honestly, as a warning of how quickly a colony can vanish — not as a place to see penguins.
